View full detailsJiu Jitsu / BJJ mats and kickboxing mats are designed with the specific needs of their respective martial arts in mind, which results in differences in their construction, thickness, and surface texture. Here’s how they differ:
Typically thicker than kickboxing mats, ranging from about 30mm to 40mm thickness. The extra thickness provides more cushioning for ground-based techniques and takedowns.
Often have a tatami-style texture, which provides grip for grappling and ground fighting without being too abrasive to skin.
While cushioned, Jiu Jitsu mats are firm enough to provide stability for standing techniques and transitions to the ground.
Usually made from high-density foam to absorb impacts from falls and takedowns.
Usage:
Designed primarily for grappling, BJJ training, Judo, and other martial arts that involve a significant amount of ground work.

BJJ 30mm grey black mats
Generally thinner than Jiu Jitsu mats, often around 20mm or less. This thickness provides enough padding for footwork and striking while allowing for quick movements.
Can vary, but typically smoother than Jiu Jitsu mats to facilitate footwork and movement. Some kickboxing mats may also have a light tatami texture.
More firm compared to Jiu Jitsu mats, which helps in maintaining balance during striking and kicking.
Made from dense foam or rubber to provide a stable surface with some shock absorption for comfort.
Suited for striking-based martial arts like Muay Thai, kickboxing, and karate, where the emphasis is on standing techniques.
Interlocking Tiles vs. Roll Mats: Both Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing mats can come in interlocking tile form or as roll-out mats. The choice depends on the space and specific needs of the training area.
Hygiene and Durability: Mats for both sports are designed to be durable and easy to clean, a crucial aspect for maintaining hygiene in martial arts training facilities.
In summary, Jiu Jitsu mats are thicker and have a texture suitable for grappling, while kickboxing mats are thinner and firmer, optimized for striking and footwork. The choice of mat should align with the primary activities and safety requirements of the martial art being practiced.
Judo Mats for BJJ and Jiujitsu
Judo mats are open cell compressed foam so air can pass between the cells (like a mattress) making heavy falls more comfortable. Whereas EVA and XPE roll out mats or jigsaw mats are closed cell meaning no air can pass between the cells. This means although both will do the same job for heavy throws the Judo mat is the no.1 choice, albeit at a price.
Made from Closed Cell EVA so no water is absorbed.
Anti-bacterial.
Easily cut to fit with a Stanley knife.
Mats are reversible
Can mix different colour mats.
Edging strips included.
